PortAventura World is a Spanish Resort in Salou and Vila-seca (Catalonia) 1995 PortAventura opened. 𝐃𝐢𝐝 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐤𝐧𝐨𝐰 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭... that PortAventura has had a different name? It was 'Universal Mediterranea.' From 1998 to 2002. And from 2002 the park was named 'Universal PortAventura.' You read that right, Universal! It was a Universal Studios Park owned by NBCUniversal that also includes Universal Studios Hollywood, Universal Orlando Resort, Universal Studios Japan, and Universal Studios Singapore. This was the first and the only Universal Studios Park in Europe. That is why you can still find Woody Woodpecker in the park to this day, who is also the main mascot of PortAventura. But also Winnie Woodpecker, Betty Boop, Sesame Street, Shrek, and Pink Panther. Those licenses have been left behind after the Universal era. The striking thing is that there are no 'Studios' in the name, the reason is that the park is not designed as a recognizable Universal Studios Park. The Tussauds Group was also the (partial) owner of PortAventura (1995), nowadays it is called Merlin Entertainments, among others owner of Madame Tussauds, (Amsterdam) Alton Towers and Amsterdam Dungeon, etc. Tussauds Group sold it to NBCUniversal in 1998. Ultimately, Universal Parks & Resorts no longer had a financial interest in the Park. And the park was sold to the investment company KKR & Co (Kohlberg Kravis Roberts). And in 2005 the name was changed back to PortAventura.
